In the hours leading up to the changing of the year, I dug around on The Samba and eBay and looked for a few parts I haven't scored yet. I managed to find points, condensers and a few more caps for the ZV/JCU 4R3 distributor. I'm going to buy a couple of condensers and at least two sets of points. I'd like to find another rotor but they seem to be rather elusive against my Google-fu.
I also found NOS carb jets for the idle cut off so I bought four. They were relatively inexpensive and if I don't get them, I'll regret it later.
During the holiday travel, I missed out on a NOS in the box 12v coil. It's not often that these pop up and I wish I'd been able to snag it.
I'm sure that with the current pace of my project that another one is likely to pop up at some point.
A few days ago, I received an unexpected package from one of my parts sources in Germany. Inside the box was a new matchbook with VW logo/parts and what appears to be a wet wipe with dealer information-a means of advertisement, and 10 of the W8AC Bosch spark plugs that are becoming harder and harder to find.
A very welcome sight, indeed, and a great gesture of appreciation.
I've now collected the rear suspension sub frame (some assembly required), a rebuilt transmission with axles and backing plates (needs rear brakes and emergency brake cables installed), front disc brakes, a NOS front beam and all of the stuff to finish off the front beam...the pan is painted and awaiting my ability to schedule a trip out West to pick it up and then I should be able to get this stuff put together. I'm kind of happy that I kept the roller wheels for now since I haven't had time to get the latest group of powder coat parts to the shop for work.
I'm currently on the hunt for a shop that will black zinc coat my soon to be purchased hardware. Once I get that nailed down, I think I'm in excellent shape for this stuff to go back together quickly and start to form the bottom section of a car. 2014 looks to be the year to bring about some physical progress.
