All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem.

I spent about four hours working on the car.  Completely removed the tar boards, wire wheeled most of the rest of it off of the pan.

The pan is in surprising shape (so far) at the front half.  The back half seems to have met its match with a jack a few times (being jacked up in the wrong plate-bending the floor pan).  I found no holes in the floor after work with the wire wheel.
The left side kick panel is in good shape-all the way to the bottom without rot.  This photo shows one of the last pieces of the rubber mat.
Right side kick panel-this side is in great shape but it's loose from the floor pan.  I'm not sure what the plan will be with this pan...I could get rear halves and weld them in-fix the two weird hack jobs and call it done.  I think the direction will depend upon what this looks like when it's completely apart.
I very lightly went over the cargo floor area to remove the fuzzy stuff glued to the floor.  The wiring is hiding the dent in the engine lid gasket area.  Once the starter is disconnected, I'll be able to remove the last part of the wiring harness.  The rest of it came out without much incident.  I did find a couple of cracked wires but overall it's in good condition.
The "A" pillar on the left side of the car.  I wire wheeled it down to the metal-to see how much was left.  The damage is contained in the bottom 6" of the pillar and is rather extensive in the heater channel/rocker area.  The front part of the channel/rocker will have to be fabricated because it's rusted to nothing-it's just dust flakes of brown metal.

Tomorrow is the big day-the body comes off the pan and it gets put onto a stand of its own.  I bought the hardware and the wheels yesterday.  I have 1/2 of the wood and I'll be going to get the rest of it tomorrow morning.  By mid-day, the body should be on a cart.  I'm really curious about the underside of the heater channels but I'm not expecting much given the condition of the rockers.  Tomorrow will reveal the last hidden spots.

Everything is separated and ready to go.  The doors presented no real challenge and the only thing that is in the way is the steering column-which will come out tomorrow (it's been oiled for tomorrow).  Steering box is still tight and the rust on the pan is light so the underside is looking pretty good.  I did find some tape and rust on the front of the heater boxes today-I'm hoping that it's not extensive and can be neutralized and corrected without significant cost.

If I'm feeling particularly adventurous, I might pull out the 12v chokes and starter and see if I can get the engine to turn over once the body is off the car.

  1. Sounds like your finding a lot of good in the car after all. And you have some good projects ahead. So what are your plans for Ferris right now?

  2. I am finding some good stuff on the car. All of my plans thus far are theoretical in nature because one little outlier can change the direction completely. I'm going to be far more flexible and adaptable to the results until I have a painted body to work with for assembly.
