02 December 2012

You never realize how boring your life is until someone asks you what you like to do for fun

I started peeling away the layers of stuff that needs to be done in order to get this car back up on tires.  I've devised a complicated, yet simple, plan to make it all happen.  That was the easy part...the hard part is making it happen.

I took advantage of the fact that it's 2 December 2012 and it was 62 degrees.  After a trip to three hardware stores this morning for house remodel stuff, I made my way into the garage to get some work done.

I stood by the door and just looked around.  After a couple of minutes surveying the scene, I tore the entire garage apart in an ambitious quest for greater organization.  I pushed Ferris outside into the driveway and started moving stuff around.

About two hours into it, this is what the garage looked like:

I spent quite a bit of time just figuring out what I have and what I want to keep vs. what I need to keep.  I started posting ads but I'm sure there will be quite a few more.  I found that I have four rear hatch windows, yet I need only one.  I probably have five complete sets of side glass and two sets of pop out frames, along with two near new windshields-that are a bitch to store.

The work space underwent a rather moderate redesign-although you can't see it here (this was tear down).  I'm making the shelves over the work bench nearly four feet longer, adding three shelves at the rear (next to the newly moved cabinet) for the finished parts and added another section for long parts (similar to the one on the back wall).  It looks a lot better now but it's not done so I didn't take any pictures.

This whole thing started when I looked around the garage and realized that we had a lot of random, but large, pieces of 3/4" plywood stacked all over the place.  I challenged myself with utilizing the existing materials while increasing organization.  I need a few more brackets-which I'll pick up on my way to work tomorrow-to finish the job.  The shelves for the wall on the right are coming from closets in the house that we're tearing apart to refinish.

...I have to admit:  This was also partially due to the fact that I went looking for a part and couldn't find it-it actually took me a few hours to find it.  That told me that I wasn't as organized as I thought and that I needed to make some improvements.

Background Tune: "Dirty Paws" by Of Monsters and Men  (I really need to listen to a new album...)
