I found some time today to remove the front beam, spindles and steering from the pan tonight after doing some painting in the house. I was planning to use the front beam - paint it and put it back together for the car...only when I got the front beam off the pan, I discovered that it was rusted through at the collar rubber on the bottom.
Yet another unfortunate discovery with this car.
So...looks like I'm going to have to figure out how to get all of the sand out of the original beam (from the 64), install new bearings and bushings and put it all back together. It's a definite set back but not entirely unexpected at this point.
On the bright side, the front brakes look pretty good, the front backing plates are in decent shape and the ball joints came right out.
I'm hoping to have some extra time this weekend in between gathering at a friend's house to cut down a tree and socialize (same house) and various projects around the house. I should be able to strip down the pan and get things better sorted and have a more firm grasp on what I have vs. what I need to finish the car.
I say it over and over again...I have to get rid of some of this stuff that's piled up in the garage.
Two weeks until Effingham and three weeks until The Classic...I'm looking forward to it.
