Another Type 3 owner and I have been discussing the various eccentricities of owning these cars-the search for parts, the cost of things, the difficulty in sourcing period correct parts, etc. I mentioned what I refer to as "The Type 3 jinx" and it goes like this:
The habit of spending money in the wrong place is what I call "The Type 3 Jinx". It prevents you from completely fixing/finishing anything on the car because you get distracted by NOS boxes and parts that you don't think you'll ever find again so you buy them.
It'll explain why I have two NOS distributors and two NOS ignition columns when I really only need one. I've been going through my parts and discovering that I have spares to spares of spares to spares of some parts. But because it's a jinx, I can't bring myself to sell any of it because I keep thinking "What if I break one during installation? I won't have another one!" so I've kept it all. WTF.
I'd pretty much convinced myself that I was done buying parts for the rest of the year. I've passed on buying quite a few things that I normally can't resist. There are at least five NOS mufflers for sale right now with reasonable prices on them...I have one NOS muffler (and it's a maintenance part) but I've managed, so far, to keep myself from buying another one.
Then the photo in this post shows up in my email this morning. It's a pile of NOS parts that one of my sources in Germany just scored. I looked up the part numbers I could read and didn't find anything that was of interest but given that I could only read about ten part numbers, I also know I'm seeing the tip of the iceberg.
Of course, I'm now anxiously awaiting the news of the contents beyond what I can see and search for in the parts book. It's not all Type 3 parts but I'm sure there's more than a healthy portion of those parts present.
More to come on this topic, I'm positive...
