Work space revision #3

I wasn't quite content with the last layout of parts/tools with the last revision.  We also finished painting the garage so I wanted to have a more 'complete' look to my work area.

The damaged ignition column did yield one nice surprise but there's a story to get to the reveal.

Several months ago, I purchased a NOS contact plate and a NOS turn signal arm.  Upon receipt, I discovered that they did not fit together.  After doing some digging, I learned that Volkswagen used two different suppliers who made things slightly differently.  The design appears to have changed between years as well (although I don't know when they changed because it's not listed in the parts book).  So, I was stuck.

When I took the steering column apart, I discovered that the contact plate and arm were the two pieces I needed to complete the other set...meaning that I had two perfect condition turn signal arms.  I just need to get a new ignition to replace the damaged one and everything will be perfect.

Here are the pieces with their correctly paired parts:

The one on the top has a 'guide rail' on the inside of the turn signal arm, while the contact plate is rather simple in design.  The one on the bottom has a more complex contact plate and no 'guide rail' on the signal arm.

The part number on the left, while 'earlier', isn't in my parts book (it's the one without the guide piece on the other side).  The part on the right, however, is in the parts book.  Both are made by the same company but at different times.

The only problem with this parts book information?  The 551A fits a part that's not in the book and made by SWF, not "K"...

...the mystery continues.

  1. That's a nice little surprise. I had a turn signal switch that I bought that I just couldn't get to fit right, I thought it was just cheaply built (and maybe it was) but perhaps that could have been my problem.

  2. I've seen quite a few of the 503 arms with the 551 contact plates in the past...the 551A contact plate was new to me.
